So, as I mentioned a couple of weeks ago, hoodlums broke into my the side door of my detached garage and stole both of my bikes. Losing the mountain bike wasn't a huge deal, but I'm pissed about my road bike. It was a Ridley Icarus SLS...not the fanciest bike, but I had fitted for me, and it was SO comfortable and fun to ride. Filed a police report, but I don't expect anything to come of it.
I had my garage side door repaired, and a very sturdy additional lock installed on friday. That day I also put in an insurance claim. This was a pleasantly easy process, and I will be getting reimbursed not only for the door repair, but also getting a surprising amount back to cover the loss of the bikes.
additionally, it turns out my brother has a very nice bike he wants to sell...he got a great deal on it, however he barely rides it because he got a triathlon bike shortly afterwards and rides that exclusively. He is willing to sell it to me for substantially less than what he paid for it just to recoup the storage space. It's essentially a new $3000 bike and I'll be getting it for less than half of that.
So I will be picking it up this weekend and taking it for a ride to see how I like it.
it's a 2011 Trek Madone 5.1C H2...carbon fiber frame, SRAM Rival drivetrain, Bontrager components, and it's ORANGE!
Can't wait to take it for a ride!

You'll be getting an all carbon bike for significantly less than the new purchase price? That's pretty damn sweet, mate. Sorry to hear about your old bike, it looks pretty nice. I see it has/d the Tiagara shifters. Anything with those is a nice road bike.

edit: The Ridley had SRAM Apex derailleurs and shifters. So the Trek will be a step up in components, but still has the doubletap system that I'm already used to.

Well, even better. It's hard to tell from the pic. I saw the levers behind the brakes and figured they were the Tiagara's or the upgrades (forget the name).

Apex is equivalent to Tiagra, I think. Rival is equivalent to the next Shimano step which is the 105.

Right, the 105's. The lack of continuity with the names always bugs me. I'm no bike expert either, but I know my way around them.

Use any extra money to get some bright ass exterior lighting, cameras (real or fake), and a dog. I hate thieves.

While I'm sorry for your loss, I do see a light at the end of the proverbial tunnel that you'll be getting a better bike. A coworker's garage set itself on fire a few weeks back and torched his prized possessions. You can't put a price on the joy an old bike gives you, but the insurance company can, and it's usually a high price
